Ollie the owl lived in a big elm tree near a flowing river in a beautiful place called Butterfly Meadow. Ollie was a little owl with a big problem; he couldn't "hoot". No matter how hard he tried he couldn't make the "whooooo" sound that all owls made. This made him very sad.
One day as he was sitting on a high tree branch, Bert the bird flew up to join him. Bert and Ollie had been friends for a very long time. Right now Ollie needed a good friend.
"Hello Bert," replied Ollie as his eyes began to fill with tears.
"What's wrong, Ollie?" asked Bert. "You look as if you have lost your best friend and yet I'm still here. I'm not lost!"
Ollie looked up at Bert with a slight smile and said, "I'm sure glad you are here. I need some help."
"I'll help if I can," replied Bert. "What's the problem?"
Ollie swallowed hard and said shyly, "Bert, I can't hoot like all the other owls in my family. I've tried hard, but nothing comes out."
"Well, maybe you're too young to hoot," Bert said.
"No, that's not it," said Ollie. "I'm as old as my cousin Sonny and he hoots every night."
"I guess I can't help you after all, but I think I might know someone who can," said Bert.
"Who?" said Ollie.
"Earl the Squirrel seems to be very wise in many ways, maybe he can help." Bert said.
"That sounds like a good idea, let's go see Earl," said Ollie.
So off they flew to Earl the squirrel's house on the other side of Butterfly Meadow. They found him gathering nuts for the winter.
"Hello Earl!" Ollie and Bert said together.
"Hello fellas!" replied Earl. "Want to help me gather some nuts?"
"Maybe tomorrow," answered Ollie. "Right now, I have a problem and I need help to solve it."
"What's the problem?" asked Earl.
"I can't hoot!" said Ollie hanging his head in shame.
"That's a big problem for a little fellow like yourself," said Earl. "I don't believe that I can help you, but I think I know someone who can."
"Who?" asked Ollie
"Who?" asked Bert.
"Annie the ant," came Earl's answer. "She helped me with a problem that I had last week. Maybe she can help you today."
So Ollie the owl, Bert the Bird, and Earl the squirrel traveled to Annie the ant's house to seek her help. Annie was busy working when the trio of animal friends arrived.
"Good day, Annie," said the trio of animals.
"Good day to you, too, boys," replied Annie as she stopped working so she could talk with her company.
"Annie," said Ollie. "I have a big problem and I need help."
"I'd like to help if I can," said Annie. "What's the problem?"
"I can't hoot," Ollie felt a little embarradded as he admitted his problem.
"Well, now! said Annie. "You do have a problem. All owls should know how to hoot. Let's see, when did you first realize you had this problem?
Ollie thought and thought and then replied, "I guess it was when I first tried to hoot."
Annie looked at Bert the bird, Earl the squirrel, and then back to Ollie the owl. She then said, "I think I know who can help you."
"Who?" asked Ollie the owl.
"Who?" asked Bert the bird.
"Who?" asked Early the squirrel
"You all can," said Annie the ant with a smile. "Just listen to what you just said."
All of a sudden Ollie realized for the first time what he had been saying all along.
"Who? Whoooooooooooooooooo?" Ollie said happily.
"Thank you, Annie," said Ollie as he and Bert went back to the other side of the meadow to help Earl the squirrel gather nuts.
Ollie could hardly wait for night to come so he could show his family that he could hoot, too.
The End
